«La preziosità o gli arabeschi non sovraccaricano mai i miei disegni, perché fanno parte dell’orchestrazione del quadro», parola di Henri Matisse. Alle Scuderie del Quirinale a Roma dal 5 marzo al 21 giugno 2015 “Matisse Arabesque”, oltre cento capolavori per la prima volta in Italia dai maggiori musei del mondo: Tate, MET, MoMa, Puškin, Ermitage, Pompidou, Orangerie, Philadelphia, Washington. In mostra le suggestioni che lʹOriente ebbe sulla pittura di Matisse: i suoi colori vibranti liberano le composizioni dalle costrizioni della prospettiva e della verosimiglianza fondandole sul puro spazio, plastico e vasto. Dal mercante d’arte Ambroise Vollard Matisse acquista nel 1899 un disegno di Van Gogh, un busto di Rodin, un quadro di Gauguin, uno di Cézanne, maestri che influenzeranno la sua opera, come il Marocco, l’Oriente, l’Africa, la Russia, di cui seppe cogliere l’essenza più spirituale, regalandoci una dimensione pittorica non semplicemente decorativa.
